Cecilia Gentili, who received sainthood as “Mother of all Whores” with a historic funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in February of 2024, redefined what it meant to be a matriarch.

Her motherhood, at once earthly, yet otherworldly and divine, was a beacon of warmth for trans folks, sex workers, immigrants, and marginalized peoples. In this portrait, she is re-baptized ahead of her one-woman show RED INK in which she shared vignettes of her many encounters with faith. Within those fantastical stories she points at the sanctimonious people who professed to be doing God’s work while dehumanizing the very people they were meant to look after.

In contrast, throughout Gentili’s years of advocacy, community building, and visionary leadership, she ministered to those cast out by their families, religion, and society. Her motherhood conferred a sense of belonging and hope – modeling how to truly tend to someone’s heart, mind, and body in the most nourishing and holistic ways.

Gentili, adorned in a white, long-sleeved dress and partially submerged in reflective ripples of water, couldn’t have foreshadowed that the baptism performed at the creek in her upstate home would be the preceding ritual before her sainthood into the canon of trans revolutionaries.

It's in this light that Santa Cecilia, “Madre de Todas las Putas,” is known for her generous spirit and holy dedication to our collective liberation.
