Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in late 2017, Puerto Rico was left in a state of traumatic shock and grief: Maria was the deadliest natural disaster in recorded history to hit the island with over 5,000 fatalities and serious damages to homes, schools, and hospitals. Relief to the U.S. colony was slow and financially stunted by government corruption.
In 2020, while still recovering from Maria, Puerto Rico was rocked by a swarm of earthquakes that shut the power on the island and further debilitated its crumbling infrastructure.
The earthquakes uncovered political corruption (#RickyRenuncia) and riled up community uproar that ousted the local governor. Grassroots organizers shut down Old San Juan, highlighting Puerto Rico’s multiple crises and the chokehold combination of the island's colonial present.
